Pregnancy is a word that carries different emotions for every woman. For some, it’s exciting; for others, it may be overwhelming, scary, or even bittersweet. Just as there’s no single rulebook for motherhood, pregnancy isn’t a one-size-fits-all experience. What I share here may not be 100% true for everyone, but I’m sure many of you will find it relatable.
For me, pregnancy was the happiest time of my life. I cherished every moment, knowing that my little one was always with me, listening, growing, and feeling everything I did. I made sure to give him the best start, even when he was just a tiny seed inside me. And I believe every mother does the same.
Yet, I’ve met many women who are scared of pregnancy because of the taboos and fears society has ingrained in us. Whether it’s the pain of childbirth or the physical changes that come with carrying a baby, people often focus on the challenges rather than the beauty of the journey.
Some will tell you to “do it quickly” before it’s too late. And while it’s true that biological factors like age and lifestyle can affect fertility, pregnancy is not something to be rushed. A woman should take her time—both physically and mentally—to prepare for this life-changing experience.
Before I conceived, people would ask, “Why do you need to mentally prepare? It’s just pregnancy!” And I’d think—Really? This is something that happens to my body, my mind, and my entire life. I am the one bringing a new soul into this world. My body needs to be strong, and my mind needs to be at peace to nurture my baby right from the time they are in my belly. If I am not physically fit, my journey may become difficult. If my mental health suffers, my body will feel the strain even more. So, dear moms-to-be, take your time. Prepare yourself for what is truly one of the most incredible phases of your life.
Something people don’t often tell you is that trying to get pregnant takes patience. The process can be unpredictable, and stress plays a huge role. Think about how anxious we feel when our periods are late. Now, imagine the reverse—when you’re hoping for a pregnancy, and your period arrives on time! 😅
Physical Fitness
Start by making healthy choices even before you conceive. Eating nutritious foods like almonds, walnuts, and figs in the morning, staying active—whether it’s walking, gym workouts, or yoga—can boost your stamina and prepare your body for pregnancy.
Mental Fitness
For my mental well-being, I turned to meditation, yoga, and journaling. I also sought therapy to address some personal challenges, wanting to clear my mind and be in the best space before pregnancy. This helped me stay positive and truly love myself throughout the journey.
Dentist Appointment
Oral health is often overlooked, but gum infections and poor dental hygiene can impact pregnancy. It’s best to get a dental checkup and cleaning before conceiving to avoid potential complications.
C-Section is an easy way out
C-sections are often misunderstood as the ‘easy way out,’ but in reality, recovery can be more challenging than a vaginal birth. While the surgery itself is painless, the post-op recovery requires time and care. That said, sometimes a C-section is medically necessary, and no mother should feel guilty for needing one.
Don’t buy new shoes – you are going to outgrow them 😥
Your shoe size will change as you reach your third trimester, and they might not go back to being the previous size again!! This happens due to pregnancy hormones (like relaxin) loosening ligaments in the feet. So, beware when looking for new shoes. Instead, opt for comfy, slightly larger or adjustable footwear that will support your feet as they swell!
Get that promotion you are looking for!!
If you are looking for a promotion or its due, make sure you get it at least before you announce at your workplace that you are planning your maternity leave. While many companies support diversity and equality, biases can still exist. If you’re up for a promotion, securing it before announcing your pregnancy might be a smart move.
Final Thoughts
This is why mindfulness, patience, and faith in the process are crucial. Stressing too much only makes things harder. Instead, focus on keeping both your body and mind in a positive, healthy state.
Pregnancy is not just about growing a baby—it’s about growing into a mother. A positive mindset can work wonders throughout this journey. Take care of your body, nourish your mind, and most importantly, enjoy the experience.
